The Summer Trends We Will Be Rocking The Moment We Come Out of Lockdown

style & fashion

Apparently spring has sprung. Not that we would know it, of course. Thank you, Coronavirus.

Despite being cooped up inside, we are trying to remain in good spirits and stay positive, ever hopeful that Covid-19 will disappear for good and we can finally start celebrating the warmer weather we have been longing for since October.

As soon as we get the green light from the government, we will be planning holidays, outings with friends, barbecues with families, and every other activity imaginable. And of course, we want the best wardrobe to do it all in!

Let’s take a look at some of the summer trends that have taken the runways by storm and will find their way into our summer wardrobes in just a matter of months*.

*Hopefully…

Boiler suits

Boiler suits, jumpsuits, playsuits, rompers – there’s a place for every single one this summer! Boiler suits in particular will be having a serious moment this summer, as are more laid back, casual interpretations on the increasingly popular glorified onesie trend.

This Grace & Mila Amelot red jumpsuit has the potential to see us through the whole spring/summer season. The elasticated waist screams comfort, while the option to add a wait-cinching belt, a matching clutch, and some sky-scraping heels instantly takes it from day to night, opening the door to a world of styling possibilities. Virus permitting, this will be one of the first things we pack for our summer holidays!

Summer suits

Suits got a summer make-over, which means we can still suit up and look sharp in the office without melting in long-sleeved, heavy-fabric pieces. The trick to make summer suits work is to choose simple, utilitarian designs, and keep the colour palette subtle. Look to the Givenchy, Max Mara and Michael Kors runways for inspiration.

Alternatively, you could choose to make the most of summer and go for short suits in relaxed silhouettes and slightly more adventurous prints. This Garcia Sandshell jacket, teamed with the matching shorts, is a great example, and positively screams summer to us!

Suits with shorts and the traditional long-sleeved blazer are a great way to ease you into the trend – especially if you stick to your usual black and grey colour palettes. And another way to inject some summer into your office suits is to stick with the traditional long trouser and blazer combos, and go for bold, summer hues instead. This bright pink Access Fashion blazer and trouser combo is a great example of maintaining tradition and adapting the colour palette to the season.

Bermuda shorts

We love effortless pieces, and Bermuda shorts are one of those throw on and go summer staples. They can be dressed up or down with ease, but we love the idea of embracing the popular 90s minimalist trend and going for clean and simple accompaniments.

Shorts won’t just come in Bermuda form this summer, though. As well as chic, more formal versions appearing in suit form – see above – we will also be seeing a lot of short shorts. Hotpants, if you will. If you don’t want to expose quite as much skin, take the Chanel approach and pair them with a chic pair of tights.

All white

And speaking of clean and simple. White summer pieces – in particular, dresses – are going to be all the rage in the next few months. Avoid the white dress at the next family barbeque, but consider it for alfresco lunches and drinks with friends during those long summer nights.

White linen trousers – actually, all white trousers, including the classic love-them-or-hate-them white jeans – are also going to be big this summer. We can’t wait to team them with literally every single thing we own. From white tops to multi-coloured blouses to all the printed pieces in our wardrobes, the styling possibilities are endless!

The LBD

Shame on you if you thought that there was no place for the LBD in a summer trends round-up. It’s a staple for a reason! Every season, designers reinvent the LBD in subtle ways, but the classic formula essentially stays the same. After all, why mess with perfection?

Until we are in the true height of summer, we’ve accepted that it’s bound to get a little chilly, especially at night. Therefore, LBDs with long sleeves are still very much on our radar – and this casual but chic Access Fashion black dress with rope belt is one of many examples of a classic LBD that can be worn from day to night, in all seasons.

Double floral

Double floral – the more feminine cousin of the double denim trend! Wearing floral on floral is going to be huge this summer, so don’t get rid of any of your floral pieces just yet. Big floral patterns can be juxtaposed with smaller ones, as can similar floral designs in different colour combinations.

And don’t neglect show-stopping single floral pieces either. Large floral patterns in particular are having a big moment right now – no pun intended – and this Access Fashion piece is a great example of what’s to come.
